In a recent announcement Environment Minister Rob Renner told Albertans that the recycling rates will go higher as of November 1st
Beer cans and bottles will stay at their current rate of 10 cents, but smaller containers of less than 1 litre, will go from 5 to 10 cents. This new rate applies to water bottle and pop cans. Large container will also increase from 20 cents to 25.
He also announced that starting June 1, 2009 Alberta will be the only jurisdiction in North America to accept all sizes milk cartons in the recycling program.
With these new changes, the government aims to increase the return of refundable beverage containers from approximately 75% as of now to 85%, and by such decrease the quantity sent to landfill.
